In a scene in the movie, police were investigating a crime and suddenly FBI agents showed up, were highly respected... and actually began helping and solving the crime.
I realized while watching that how far things have fallen.

It's certainly worse, but I'm sure the FBI was pretty corrupt back then too.

Remember J Edgar Hoover was a total nutjob.
Definitely it was corrupt although perhaps not so much, and no one could do anything about it because Hoover was a vindictive nut job. Fish rots from the head. People who helped Hoover continued on.
From the beginning the FBI was a domestic spy agency designed to accumulate leverage against...everyone.
I believe it was “J Edgar” the Eastwood movie where an assistant comes into Hoover’s office and finds him “painting” a portrait of a naked young man”.
