It appears that the "hanging threads" are over the "gold rope" in the top photo, and in the bottom, the "gold rope" is pushed aside. Knowing how meticulous these members are about uniform protocols, I'm guessing this has some sort of military significance. We'll have to wait for someone with experience in these matters to signify what it means.
Although another point of significance is that Melania was offered his right arm for the escort, while Gaga was denied the "right arm protocol" and was instead grasped with the left arm. Perhaps this is what the green arrow is referring to, if not the "gold braids" mentioned above.
In the military, when escorting a prisoner, you grasp them with your left hand, keeping your right hand free in case you need to grab your weapon, or render a slice to a senior officer. You NEVER, EVER, EVER carry/grasp/hold anything in your right hand.
Also, th shoulder chords in Gaga's pic are wrong. They look like Army chords. His Combination Cover is wrinkled, gloves are wrinkled, too coat fits too loosely and looks slovenly. Sunglasses worn indoors, slouched demeanor, head cocked to one side. ALL of that are clear violations of the USMC Honor Guard Manual. If that guy's a Marine, I'm Uncle fucking Sam.
What is the green arrow in the bottom referring to exactly?

For the benefit of us non-USA-non-military... WTF are "shoulder chords?" A chord is something you play in music isn't it?
That would be cords, not chords.
Thanks Pede for the explanation, it would make sense that details do matter when it comes to military dress and procedure.
