Negative, there is protocol for anything with a safety potential because of insurance. Everything that could be considered a risk is scrutinized due to liability. If a gun had to be pointed at a camera it would have a remote monitor connected or protection for the operator otherwise the set would never be insured and the movie would never be made.
I don't think they were even filming at the time, just chilling in a closed cabin where no one else could see what was happening....
I was not spouting a theory, that was what I read in an article reporting what happened. If I can track it down I will link it.
I heard several workers on the set had previously quit due to safety issues. Alec was shooting in New Mexico away from Hollywood sets and was cutting corners everywhere. He’s a total ‘loose cannon’ (/s) ...it fits his profile. I’m leaning towards u/Blurpy theory above as likely(?).
