Godfather III was received poorly when it debuted but is actually a pretty ballsy call-out of the Vatican. It’s surprising Francis Ford Coppola wasn’t murdered for telling this story. Hell, I’d argue Coppola’s exposure of the Vatican in GF III is more damning than that of Stanley Kubrick’s call-out of the Oligarch sex cult activities in Eyes Wide Shut. And they killed Kubrick over that and had Steven Spielberg oversee the final edit of EWS to make sure it didn’t tell too much of the truth. Watch both of those movies, they are crazy.
Iirc, Spielberg sanitized Kubrick's "final" film "A.I." about children robots. Eyes Wide Shut was a "generic studio edit". I may be wrong, but don't believe I am. Not a huge deal regardless.
But I REALLY wonder what Kubrick's version had to say about how those "robots" were used...
Just kidding, I don't "wonder" about it at all. Touches nose
Kubrick was developing but never started filming A.I. but instead gave the project to Spielberg. That being said, there was a 4+ hour long cut of Eyes Wide Shut that was screened for execs at Warner Bros. - and was definitely not the final cut that Kubrick had intended.
Shortly after his death Spielberg was brought in to retcon the project into a far less scandalous version of the movie that we would have seen. Spielberg ultimately gave the studio the version of the film that they wanted, this version is not what we would have seen had Kubrick not died.
There are only a handful of people on the planet that truly know what that that cut would have looked like. Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Steven Spielberg, those few studio execs, Kubrick’s wife, Kubrick’s longtime assistant/actor Leon Vitali. Kubrick worked so secretively that very few - or - no actors and crew had complete copies of the script. The scripts you can purchase on eBay today are translations from the movie that you can currently watch or own on DVD/Blu Ray. They don’t include the “sides” (aka: individual script pages for one actor only) these sides were shot with skeletal crews that ended up on the cutting room floor at the hands of Spielberg because they were way too scandalous to be shown without waking up the public and letting them in on the truly wicked Oligarch/Cabal rituals.
Here we are today, more aware, more awake. Had Kubrick lived, he still might not have been able to give us the cut of EWS that he had wanted... but it definitely wouldn’t have been the edit Spielberg (uncredited as editor) gave us.
