Idk, man, yes they were manipulated, but soviets committed some of the worst atrocities. Raping women, pinning them to barn doors in jesus-like poses, so many cases of that, quartering children with vehicles, crushing women and children alive with tanks.
I know it was circumstance, but we "just following orders" is an excuse we don't take.
Granted soviet soldiers came from a time where death and carnage was normal, their own government had them pinned by the balls, the propaganda was immense, and others committed atrocities to them.
I am not cool with that either. I know times of war are much different, but raping and nailing people up just to bayonet them after a whole squad rapes them, I don't care who commits things like that.
When it comes to Vietnam, those who killed innocents for fun I do not respect them. Circumstances were different because the viewing disguised themselves as civilians and one couldn't know who was who so dressing up as civilians will cause people to shoot just in case. They pulled that tactic, our guys had to adapt.
Raping and killing for fun though? Also in middle east, children running towards you could have bombs under their clothes so once those tactics are tried and a child doesn't comply and runs at you, I can understand the act.
Raping is never okay, and soviet atrocities were unparalleled.
But at the end of the day, I never served and was never in that place of mind where I watched my brothers die in front of me, so what do I know.
That makes sense, thank you for the insight.
Keep in mind we don’t know his story. He’ll he could’ve been one of the school children that was given a rifle and told to shoot. We don’t know and I honestly don’t like to assume the worst of people.
Atrocities all around. But we can't lay collective guilt on an entire military let alone country, because of some bad apples.
