To your point, the use of evergreen boughs to celebrate the Saturnalia around the December Solstice was the origin of our "Christmas Tree", it seems to me. My guess is they merged that with the Green Man tradition of the Germanic Tribes (The Green Man is, essentially [and simplifying], the God of the Wood).
Indeed even the idea of "Christmas Parties" stems from the Saturnalia,
Yes, well, IF we were to actually Observe Jesus' Birthday, we would need to know when it is that Shepherds bring in their flocks, before the winter snows....
In my estimation, that would be around the end of November, or possibly as early as the beginning of November, all depending upon the First snow of the season....
Correct. "Christmas" on December 25th is an observance of the Saturnalia and the Winter Solstice. Not the birth of Jesus.
Of course millions (billions?) treat it as a celebration of Jesus, and as such that is a good thing. But that celebration should be every day. Not December 25th.
Agreed....
