to be fair, ar's have basically zero kick, so you can hold them up against your face and fire multiple times

Very true, but in my experience I prefer not to do that for any rifle or long gun. It's just good discipline, and also even better in case something unexpected happens. When it comes to firearms it's better to be extra safe and look stupid than not safe at all and get injured.
