I don't know, it seems to me like he'd avoid it if he could do it all again. Having to fire is something no one really wants to do, and having your name dragged through the media and making you basically unemployable, it's a lot for his age.
I'm sure most good people would avoid violence if they had the choice. The point is doing what's right when you don't have a choice.
He saw people attacking his town (or his dad's town or however we're classifying it.. he has a connection to the place) and didn't see people defending it, and he probably felt like he didn't have a real choice.
