Nsa has had digital records for a lot longer than you think…
This! The technology to scan an image has been around for over 70-80+ years. Back then a photo or - a negative of a photo could be “drum scanned” making a backup copy - typically another hard copy (physical print). Then with computer technology and it’s storage capabilities - tape, floppy, hard drives all your older data would be archived again by a person or teams. Or all that blackmail is still sitting in a storage facility in boxes in a temperature controlled environment. Just because the original blackmail wasn’t created with a digital camera doesn’t mean it can’t be archived digitally today.
Definitely for anything exposed to the internet over the last 30 years.
How long have they been connected to the phone network?
