Basically before moving pictures most people never got to see anything like it - but people did tend to follow politics closely and the actions of very undesirable wealthy people. Said wealthy people saw the power of the misdirection and moved the red carpets that were symbolic of blood rituals and other things to constantly run rituals in their faces and promote needless idolatry to distract. it worked. It's also why the symbolism has only become more open and pervasive.
