The most effective protective measure is to hit the bug hard as soon as you feel ill: gargle with mouthwashes and use water-based iodine drops up the nose. The mouthwash medicine he recommends must contain Delmopinol hydrochloride or cetylpyridinium chloride. Just FYI Listerine (gold) has both.
Both work. Including it with the saline spray is more effective since you target the most vulnerable cells namely at the back of the nose. Personally I use water or a carrier oil for general health as I find the essential oil too strong.

A few drops of oregano oil in a nasal saline spray does a great job of stopping it in its tracks.
