I'm not throwing away his hypothesis, but I'd like to have some validation that the scanners are, indeed, going to be used for that. Maybe the top scanner is a temperature reading device... if you've got a fever, we don't want you opening the door (regardless of covid crap... a fever is a fever).
I'm also wondering if he is in places like Portland or San Francisco where they have a looting problem. These might make it easy for employees to lock quickly if they get hit. Notice he says "You can't even break through them". That sounds like the perfect doors to stop looters.
The device on top is too high to read temperature. Average height people would have to stand on their tiptoes to reach it or try hopping at lot.
It would be a lawsuit in waiting on behalf of people with dwarfism or who are physically handicapped and can't stand up to that height. They'd get sued to hell and back if they put a temperature scanner up that high. What about elderly people who can't reach it?
