I not only had prayers and daily devotionals in my school, we also repeated the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag every morning. This was a time when citizens trusted our government to always do the right thing.
And American manufacturing was the best in the world. Our products could last a lifetime if taken care of.
I think that the very first insult to American trust was when JFK was assassinated. Suddenly everything we took for granted, especially peace and safety here at home, was revealed as a fallacy. It shook all generations at the time. And every major event after that, from Nixon to loss of the Vietnam War only served to eroded public trust even further.
Well it was a very different time, as I said. Dems and Republicans could agree to disagree on many things, vote differently in congress, and go out for drinks afterwards and tell jokes to each other. Party loyalty was real, but at the end of the day, they were all Americans.
All that changed around the Clinton era and got more divided with subsequent presidents. Somewhere along the way it became nasty and radicals took over the Demwit Party.
By the time Obama came about, the battle lines were being drawn, and now we have what we have today. Few people can remember what it used to be like in those days.
JFK won the presidency and Americans accepted it and moved on. His assassination affected every American deeply. I remember the Sunday after he was assassinated our Baptist church held a prayer vigil, even though nearly everyone there was a Republican.

Hard to believe, isn't it?
It really was a more innocent time, wasn't it...
Not really, American-made products are still some of the best in the world, if not the best, there's just precious little still made here anymore...
Nixon, among others, really sold us out, didn't he?

Seems weird that a Democrat would be popular even with Republicans... maybe that's just my generation showing, though...

Like I said, a different time.
