The problem here isn't the violence... its the dude threatening a man's family. We have become a society obsessed with being non-violent. No one ever recognizes the fact that there are words you should in fact respond to with violence... like a threat made against your family.
If I remember my liberal arts law classes from college, assault is the act of threatening someone with your words, and battery is following through on it.
