I feel like you gotta open it up to get to the chip anyways so why not just shove a usb stick in there instead? It's not a bad theory in terms of getting important intel from another nation, but I highly doubt they went through such lengths regarding the chip already in the ball.
Just thinking out loud here, but maybe the ball has to pass SS security scrutiny? Maybe the intel has to fool security as a protocol? I could be wrong, I bow to anyone's better knowledge.
Nfc chips can be read with a scanner… think when you tap your credit card or phone the the credit card machine at a store…. Nfc makes it so you dont need to open up the ball

Yep NFC is extremely low power and low range, you have to be almost in physical contact to get a connection.
