I believe both he and Dr. Judy were lab workers, back in the heyday where there were no universal precautions (pre-AIDS). A friend (now prematurely deceased) used to tell me stories about massive blood sprays, etc. and how they never thought of using protective equipment. So, his illness could have been from anything.
