I was raised Catholic, ducked out of the whole thing (to agnosticism to atheism to where I am now which is "there could be God after all but organized religion has no place in it either way") before I actually got Confirmed or whatever.
Obedience to God benefits you, not God. God doesn’t need anything from us puny mortals that He can’t do for Himself. God gave us The Law to make us stronger. Praising God strengthens your spirit.

Yeah, see, I don't think God, if he exists, wants obedience.

Or other priests. The seminary hides the horrific abuse that goes on there.
Part of becoming a priest is being ritually abused - then the broken individual is sent out into the masses to abuse his way to the next "promotion".
