Yes, I think you are right, There may be no need to "isolate" the virus in order to characterise and sequence it.

I did my homework. I read the papers put forward by the Indian researchers last year who showed that the virus had sequences from it which looked like sections of HiV.

I don't just guess unless I say I am guessing.
