Once the story had made headlines, Epstein and Maxwell were the sacrificial lambs that prevented the story from going further. "We caught the perps, folks. We'll make sure they see justice. Nothing else to see here, time to move on."

This is what "Me too" was also. It's a common tactic. 1) Get in front of the issue in a very public way. 2) Make a spectacle about bringing violators (sacrificial lambs) to justice. 3) Give the issue closer and move on.
