68 here - me either- didn’t you think that was the stupidest thing you ever heard - I was thinking how’s the school roof gonna survive let alone my dad’s blanket— and what’s the water for if we’re toast 😂
I wasn’t a stupid kid ..
Very similar experience for me but we crouched under our desks. Catholic school as well, so we had our Rosary beads and we all said the Rosary together with our teacher (a Nun) crouched under her desk. Even as a young child that struck me as hilarious.
I was in second grade when kennedy was murdered Non catholic school the teacher came in crying First time I'd seen an adult cry During the missle crisis my ww11 father was upset w kennedy and thought he would get us in war There were no nuke drills in my school

If you think about it, your Dad's blanket was just like the mask, in a symbolic sense.
A piece of fabric used as protection that was believed to do more than it could.
Just like hiding from monsters in your room at night. Wtf’s a blanket over your head gonna do? Monsters gonna do what monsters do. 😁
