How come on a clear day you can see chicago 50 miles away on a beach on the Indiana side of lake michigan? I hope you say mirage as your final answer
No real problem. By pure geometry, a spherical Earth would have dropped about 1,640 feet. This is if your eyeballs were at ground level, which is decidedly pessimistic.
By an established rule (1.225 x square root of viewing altitude in feet), one could see 50 miles to features on the ground from a viewing altitude of 1,665 feet. The tallest building in Chicago is the Sears Tower, at 1,451 feet.
There is, of course, refraction of the air (density gradient => refractive index gradient). Based on the effects for radio waves, the surface would have appeared to drop only 1280 feet. It is an old truism that by the time when the setting (or rising) sun is touching the horizon, it actually would be below the horizon from strict geometry. Refraction makes that much difference.
So, it is a combination of (1) how high the viewer is, and (2) how high are the features you are looking for. No mirage is necessary. For sure, 50 miles would be a practical limit.
I earned my two masters degrees in aeronautics and astronautics in the study of aerodynamic refraction effects, and became something of an expert in the analysis of radio/radar propagation refraction.
This is ground level and you can see all of the bldgs from top to to bottom. Ground level smart guy. You can find said pics
And refraction does the trick. I was just boxing in the limits. What's your point? It is certainly not possible to see farther than that, which is what happens with a round Earth. Are you going to claim there is no refraction? That would just show you are an ignoramus. Here's an example of the photos. The effect is indeed refraction, augmented by a temperature inversion, resulting in a condition called a "fata morgana." (Cold dense air forms a lower layer with warm less-dense air above.) This simply amplifies the natural refraction. It is admitted that "conditions must be right" in order for this to occur. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/04/19/chicago-skyline-seen-from-michigan-atmospheric-phenomenon-fata-morgana-superior-mirage/
Now you go and disprove the 1972 Apollo photos of the Earth. Prove that no one is navigating around the world by ship or airplane. Prove that no one and nothing has orbited the Earth. Or show me the definitive high altitude image of the Flat Earth, all spread out like breakfast. Except that you can't, because it doesn't exist.
You're a fag who needs to talk less and go back to your 6x9 hovel in Williamsburg. At least stop talking like a hipster faggot for waaay too long.
Lol!! You came with the mirage excuse. Awesome! I told you i didn't want to hear that one. Yes folks even though we live on a sphere the only reason why you can see Chicago is a because its a MIRAGE! 😁🤪 You even came with the lame stream media report. The great awakening may not be for you. 🤣🤣😝
