Liberace was probably the first to push the homo agenda, but then I go back a few years--maybe more than you :)
I, until you mentioned it, never thought that way about the Hope and Crosby movies. I may have to watch them again to view them in a different light.
The weird thing is that despite Liberace being incredibly, flamingly obvious about his orientation, the older crowd that formed much (most?) of his base didn't seem to put two and two together -- at least in the Midwest where I lived at the time.
I think my mother told me he was "eccentric" in his ways and didn't say much more about him. My father didn't say anything--one way or the other--about him. I do think they believed he was talented.
