DDG has been spending big bucks on advertising.

Why?

Do they make any money at all?

They don't run any ads that I have seen.

Seems very spookish.

They were always a controlled opposition. Many alternative search engines use Google web crawler with slightly different algorithms to seem different too.

Brave browser search is still decent. Just tried it with this search.
