It's cumulative knowledge and hours of fiddling around. Find a good firewall you are comfortable with, play around in settings and decide what you're comfortable with giving up. Some people simply cannot function without the stock google apps, or twitter etc.
Not my first rodeo. I have a firewall that blocks all google domains and everything is disabled. No mail, calendar, map, etc.
Any chance you mind helping a caveman out to do same as you?
