The Liberal appointed senators (which are the majority) were spewing the party line so I don't personally think it was that. I think Trudeau's bosses said that he moved too quickly and exposed too much and told him to retreat.
In Canada senators are not elected and, therefore, do not have to try to woo voters. There is also little to no ability to force them to toe the party line.
This particular senator was a former judge and had some questions. What we don't know is if the questions came from him directly or if his arm was twisted.
I heard it was the banks complaining that everyone was emptying their accounts. Oh, and senate pushback. Maybe these people are just fucking idiots after all.
I just spoke to a Cananon about this, and the rumor is the senate was asking difficult questions about this and it was looking like it wouldn't pass.
