It is amazing to me that no one gets whats going on among the normies. All is quiet in Kyiv. They still have power, Internet, water, resupplies for their stores. Why? What is Russia busy with, that they neglected to take what are the first steps of a siege?
I have many friends in Ukraine who are convinced that "The Ghost of Kyiv" is so dang good, that they just can't knock out communications. They further believe that Putin is so very bad at war, that he forgot to deploy countermeasures to drone technology. So, the drones just wipe out entire columns of Russian vehicles with impunity.
The legends are rich, the gaslighting richer. Meanwhile, Russia is clearly not focused on seizing Kyiv. The normies, however, are convinced that Ukraine is just that very good and Russia is just really super bad at this business of war.
Ukraine decided to use the Ukrainian spelling and pronunciation of Kiev instead of the Russian one that they've historically used. There was a thread about it the other day with more details.
I told my husband I refuse to call it Chicken Kyiv lol, it stays Kiev for us!
It's also Qatar, not Gutter (that one I looked up and even the native speaker who does the online pronunciations said Qatar, accent on tar!).
Burma, Kiev, Mt. McKinley, the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, Washington Redskins, American Indian,....some names don't need to change. And some are fun to use just to make liberals' heads explode: like man, he, him, left-wing fascist, normal family, personal responsibility, voter ID, President Trump ;)
Oh man I forgot about Qatar, that one is annoying too.
I wish we could still use Ceylon because it's such a pretty name compared to Sri Lanka. And I still like Bombay.
I was trying to explain the "they/them" pronouns to my 80-year-old parents and they just couldn't grasp the concept. My Dad kept saying "but 'they' isn't correct grammar!" lol. I agreed and said it offends me as an English major lol.

I don't have the thread saved, unfortunately, or else I would have linked it.
