On the one hand, you’re completely correct that our sex offender laws are completely F’ed up like that (I know several good people forever tarred because they were 18 while dating a 17 year old that the 17 year olds parents didn’t like.)
On the other hand, this is Reddit, wherein a trans moderator lived with his father and a young girl they kidnapped, so I think I know which way the scales are tilted on this one.
Those laws don't apply in every state sadly.
Those laws seem to be inconsistently handled here, but we do.
Fortunately / unfortunately depending on what side you are on, the presence of any pictures or video is illegal, even in that range.
That seems to end up screwing people that would normally be protected by those laws.
Basically, it's tough to be the older one of a relationship until you are 18+. I would say to focus on education or socialization but schools are trash anyway and having relationships during your adolescence prepares you for more mature ones later.
