Firstly, the B-52 only carries conventional weapons. B-52's have NOT been carrying nuclear gravity bombs for 12-years. Around 2010, U.S. Strategic Command stopped assigning B61 and B83 nuclear gravity bombs to the B-52.
Secondly, the B-52 is VERY vulnerable to sophisticated air defenses. They were used successfully in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc... for obvious reasons. They didn't have modern high-tech air defenses. Russia does. A B-52 flying over Russia (or Ukraine) would be a sitting duck.
The title of the article is wrong. It's NOT a B-52 nuclear bomber. It's a B-52 aircraft that MIGHT be carrying a full load of conventional weapons, or since it's a reliable heavy lift vehicle, it might be carrying military cargo.
They absolutely can carry long-range nuclear-tipped weapons. Likely hypersonic.
Just because it's a 60 year old chassis doesn't mean they haven't upgraded everything on it. It's a strategic bomber for a reason.
It's a highly provocative act no matter what it MIGHT be carrying.

If we can see these bombers its because someone wants them seen. Military aircraft on mission would not be seen by this system. Just more provocation from NATO and the DS.

Well they are mixed in with all the commercial traffic detouring around Ukraine, so yeah, they want their transponders on and squawking.
The Air Force would send B-2s to drop nukes, not B52s.
And they wouldn't send just those. They would send everything including the kitchen sink. Subs, surface nukes, as well as the B-2s. There would be hundreds in the air right now, from BOTH sides.
