Can confirm your story. Spent 9 yrs in the Navy. My first duty station was ship's company aboard USS Nimitz as an AO. Was assigned to Repair Locker 1Fox for DC. Had to watch that Forrestal vid in "A" School, "C" School, and again as a member of Repair 1Fox. Had a couple old timers, Vietnam era still around. And they basically said the same thing. I've seen that damn video so many times, like you OP, the images are permanently burned into my frontal cortex. It actually gave me nightmares for a few days. Scared the living piss out of all of us trainees. But that mishap has saved countless lives since, because it's beaten into ALL Ordie and Avionics pukes to ALWAYS Double, Triple, Quadruple check the safety pins BEFORE running stray voltage checks.
"Officially," it was "stray voltage" that arced across No Name's plane, from the cockpit ordnance selector to the rocket pod station on his bird, set of a couple 5" Zuni rockets. They were doing what's called a "hot load." It's when a plane is on the deck being reloaded with fuel/ordnance, usually after returning from a combat sortie while the plane is still running. Pilots would sit in the cockpit with their birds "turning" (engines running) while the ABF's and AO's are loading the plane. Highly dangerous, and now, thanks to the Oriskanny, Forrestal, and Enterprise fires in the 60's, it's been seems too dangerous and "illegal" except during war time.
Well, No Name's plane was all loaded up and ready to go, except for one final avionics/ordnance check, the dreaded and highly dangerous "stray voltage" check. Anyway, once the Avionics guy on the deck got to that rocket post station and checked it with a multimeter, it pickled off two rockets. No Name had "forgot" to turn his station selector switch to the "OFF" position during the stray village check. The AO Safety Observer "forgot" to "Safe" the ordnance stations on No Name's bird. We have non conductive metal pins that we insert into the various launchers and bomb racks that eliminate the threat of stray voltage arcing thru the plane and pickling off ordnance. You can watch the Avionics guy touch the rocket pod and it immediately set off two rockets into the planes being hot loaded across the deck. Like, as soon as he touched the rocket pod, it went off.
Officially, it was ruled an accident, but that Avionics guy lost his job and was summarily boosted. No Name got to stay in and was labeled a "hero" for nearly being cooked alive in his bird. The Ordnance Safety Observer was booted, too for failing to safe No Name's plane. I think the Air Boss's and C.O.'s careers were shit canned, too, at the behest of No Name's father.
That guy was a highly protected individual, due to his father being an Admiral, throughout his whole career. Rumors of drinking on duty, cocaine abuse while in college and in the fleet, being late to Ready Room Briefs, being late to watch and late to flight ops, and philandering with women while he was married all were swept under the rug. He was a shit pilot, too. One of our Tomcat C.O.'s was very outspoken about No Name and how shitty of a pilot and person he really was. Like, he barely graduated flight school. His father had to intervene a handful of times, especially during his final flight quals, pulled strings to make sure his son passed Basic Flight and earned a covered role as one of Fighter Jocks.
When he was shit down, the rumors immediately started spreading about his capitulating with the NVA and dining out a bunch of our other POW pilots. Fucker gave away all kinds of Intel on our flight paths, aircraft and ordnance capabilities, ship positions, etc. And he dimed out the guy who tried to pass a note to Hanoi Jane when she visited Hanoi Hilton, after she handed tr note to the Warden. That last sentence is verifiable fact. Yet, because Daddy was an Admiral, he was protected from treason and colluding with the enemy charges which would've most likely led to his execution.
Now, I don't know if anyone would purposely leave their Station Selector Switch in an active position, especially knowing what the risks are during a stray voltage check, while also leaving his cockpit open for fresh air. I like to think he was just an idiot that didn't deserve to be in uniform, much less piloting a war plane, but with No Name and his background as an inattentive hot head, member of a Cabal Family (supposedly linked to the original Cain Clan), we can't be too sure. It could've all been down on purpose. Maybe he didn't think he'd be physically affected, who knows?
But everything he did after that "accident" was DEFINITELY done to help ensure America's demise.
Interesting insight here. You mentioned he was a "shit" pilot, and that agrees to what I learned as well. When he 'volunteered' to making those bombing runs in NV, I read somewhere he was flying too low and it was the reason why his aircraft was shot down. I believe 'daddy' demanded he volunteer for redeeming him from the 'sins' of his past.
NO NAME had no business flying. Without 'daddy' NO NAME would have been washed out of flight school and perhaps the military service. Just like in the movie "Top Gun" Val Kilmer's character "Ice" told "Maverick" to his face he was "dangerous". This was also obviously true for NO NAME. He was dangerous. After getting hit by enemy fire, NO NAME ejected from his aircraft, but he didn't follow protocol and as a result broke both his arms when he ejected from the aircraft. That's a big fundamental 'no-no' that sheds more light on his ineptness. Landing in a lake, he was at the mercy of Vietnamese fishermen who roughed him pretty good before turning him over to the VC. It must have been a pleasant surprise to the VC for someone like this to fall into their hands.
I watched the testimony of a POW who said NO NAME never stayed in the same area as the other POWS. It was also disclosed that after NO NAMES capture, the American forces were suddenly losing half their aircraft making these bombing runs into NV. So bad were the losses the US military halted the bombing runs into NV entirely. It was said NO NAME provided the coordinates of the bombing runs and the VC then set up anti-craft artillery along the entire path.
Interesting legacy, no? It is easy to see how NO NAME was a completely controlled asset to the Deep State.
