But, what determines which numbers are separated into single digits, and which are doubled? Seems lik we could do this with Manu dates. Are these breakdowns all following the same rules?

I don't know about 14.
But 6 is obvious for 666 And from what I can make out 8 = "Crazy eights".

I normally see craziness and violence when I see eight in movies and TV.

68 is a new one for me. I will keep an eye out for it.
