I "pay" for it by not having to interact with someone when I'm not in the mood to, and I get to pack my groceries in my reusable bags the way I want it, which is often much more efficient and sturdy than the worker would do. I don't mind scanning my groceries myself when I get the benefits I listed above, and I much more prefer self checkout and them letting me do what I want.
I do. I have to admit I like the self-checkout too. And for the same reasons. I can see that each thing scans right, I can use my own bags & pack it the way I want it so that icecream isn't bagged with laundry detergent, and I can scan my own coupons. AND I don't have to make nice with someone and I can keep listening to the X22 report in my ears, lol
One of my first jobs was a bagger at a grocery store. Great job, so I know how to bag properly. But today, laundry detergent and ice cream are packaged pretty well, the risk is pretty low that's really an issue anymore. Pretty sure I had headphones in during my last grocery run, just pause it when you talk to the checkout person. shrug
I agree. They've eliminated positions of employment and turned us into cashiers without paying us.

Do you bag an entire cart of groceries? Like $300 worth? Hard pass.
At the rate we're going $300 worth of groceries is going to cost $3,000 - and fit in a single bag.

Lol. That's like 3 bags.
Good point.
The loss on self check out has got one large chain thinking about eliminating self checkout. People steal em blind.
That thought has crossed my mind too. How do they know if all items were rung up?
Never place the item on the counter. Just bag it.
