Having been in IT security for 20 years I never bothered with a smart phone in the first place.
I love my flip phone. Anyone who texts me knows full well they are going to only get a one or two word response, and I don't do MMS or the internet on it :D
The best part about downgrading is that you can retain your old smartphone to be used in airplane mode, then you can turn on wifi as you need it. in this manner you control backdoor users... it is like that ad: "Alexa I am leaving home" implying: "Alexa, feel free to use the computing power of all my devices and Internet of Things possessions for whatever nefarious purposes that you care to..."
The smartphone culture is just a symptom of the larger "instant gratification" culture and "The whole world is waiting with baited breath for me to update them on my life" culture... Flip phones often still have cameras you just lose the instant gratification of being able to look at your photos right away on a bazillion pixel display, and the ability to instantly send them to the whole world at once... though you can still text a photo to a few at a time...
Good! I was given my smartphone as a present; has its uses but I will happily go back to a brick.

I hate reddit, but I just came across this subreddit completely dedicated to dumbphones: https://www.reddit.com/r/dumbphones/

that's assuming airplane mode does what we think it does. Don't things like amber alerts and EAS come through even when in airplane mode?
I never get them on a phone that I use in wifi mode but does not have a simcard installed..
