Jr/Sr year is a bit late. The thing is, lots of parents are dumb, stoned, AWOL, whatever. People do need to at least know how to (not) get pregnant around the time they can achieve such.
Now, this whole thing is yet another great argument against public schools, period.
I agree, Fifth and Sixth grade are the right time to start this. Both boys and girls at this time will be seeing some changes in their bodies, so preparation needs to begin somewhere. Anything other than the basic facts of life doesn't need to part of that preparation, IMHO, with the exception of explaining why abstinence is the best option, from both a scientific and moral standpoint.
We had a brief sex ed section of health in freshman yr high school back in about 1984 which required consent form signed by parents and covered biology parts andbtheir purpose, stages of pregnancy and avoiding date rape. The same year we also had self defense briefly in PE
