Correction: Poland was not liberated from Soviet Union until 1989. Between WW2 and fall of the Soviet Union we were independent in name only. Although not much changed, now we get orders from Washington instead of Moscow.

And fact, the #1 person responsible for the current border disputes between Russia, and Ukraine was also a Ukrainian, Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev, former leader of the Soviet Union during the height of the cold war era.
Khrushchev (Ukrainian born) was the one who carved out part of Soviet Russia (Crimea region) and placed it within the borders of Soviet Ukraine during the 1950's .
