I don't! I don't get this entire point of contention, it seems weird.
We are a republic that elects it's leaders through a democratic process. We are a democratic republic. Why is it wrong to say democracy but right to say republic even though both are missing a piece of the picture?
I'm always amazed how lazy people can be here. A 10 second search, that's it.
Here's your easily searched info.
"The USA has been a Constitutional Republic since 1789: “A continual republic is a state in which the head of state and other officials are representatives of the people and must govern within an existing constitution. In a constitutional republic, executive, legislative, and judicial powers are separate into distinct branches.”
There is a difference between a constitutional republic and a democracy. A “democracy is run by people and republic is run by the laws of constitution.”
A Constitutional Republic is a system of laws to protect citizens and contain government. Tyranny of Democracy is not an idle statement. 51.1 percent may force it’s will on 49.9 percent in a Democracy! This is on display in the House of Representative’s current impeachment dealings, which are controlled by a Democratic majority."
Basic civics. Everyone should know this without having to ask, "What's the difference?"
Only America has the American Constitution, the unique and most respected and most important document ever written for a state. All governments and peoples of the world envy us our Constitution. Geniuses wrote it.
Rule of Law: The Constitution (Laws) states what kind government we have (Republic), and to protect us, "We the people", with our G-d given rights, from those in a majority position. Individual rights are above the majority. It also clearly states how we are to chose those we want to represent us.
Rule of Man: Democracy is "Mob Rule" with no God given rights. Man (Majority) can make up rules to suit the ones in the majority with no restraints. Only thing that matters is majority. (ie... 2 wolves and a lamb vote on what is for dinner )
Another misnomer is " I have constitutional rights!". NO you don't. You have G-d given rights.
Sadly, today the constitution has been trampled on so much that it barely exist and we have allowed that to happen.
I am by no means an expert, but may I suggest you read the constitution, the amendments, Declaration of Independence and federalist papers. All are easy to read.
Exactly and at the end tell them, “I’m sure you know the difference.”

No, we are not a Democratic Republic. We are a Constitutional Republic that practices a Democratic political ideology.
The difference is quite significant. I would recommend doing a little reading on Civics to further define the two for you.
