It goes longer than that. In the late 1800s and early 1900s iodine was widely used for a variety of ailments. The Rockefellar medical agenda eventually erased the benefits of iodine from our collective memories.

I grew up around people using iodine so I am fortunate. Generations younger than me have no clue about iodine.
