Not just code for then, but in large part, a symbolic experience and vision of a future. The thing is, its a vision, and visions frequently speak in parables and symbols. Revelation will be much more like Future Proves Past, because once the reality it was speaking to has run its course, only THEN will people be able to recognize what it was pointing to.

Totally not true. Every verse in Revelation can be deciphered with the other books in the Bible, with the book of Daniel being the most important one, by far.
Revelation is written in the form of a chiasm, and that plays a big role in interpreting it.
