These are not the schools I grew up in during the 50's and 60's. I loved reading and visited my school and public library frequently growing up. After reading 'The Humanist Manifesto" in the 80's, I homeschooled my kids for many years and then worked as a substitute for many years when I put the kids in public school. It saddens me that this is what education has become. If homeschooling taught me one thing it is the joy of learning and how naturally that comes to children when they are free to learn. If we can read, we all can learn anything, anytime we want and we don't need schools or fancy degrees to become educated (even though I do understand the criteria for desseminating technical knowledge and the need for standards in these areas). I guess that's why reading is such a low priority in the schools. My heart is truly broken.
My mom taught me how to read by the age of 3.
I've been reading my entire life.
Same only I was 4.
3 here. Knew all the planets, dwarfs, and their order, all the states, and could place most countries accurately on the map by 6.
Independent self-reliant people would be a counterproductive anachronism in the collective society of the future where people will be defined by their associations. ~ John Dewey.
The hallowed halls of learning no more, the killing fields of the Inquisitive's desire to expand beyond the confines of contemporary dogma...
Blessed be to those unsung angels, that helped me to see beyond the illusion of lies.
