I've never held a gold coin, but I thought that because of its high density, it would not ping, but make more of a "thud" noise. Lead objects don't ping, so why does gold ping?
Gold ping sounds otherworldly, it's mystical!
And I always thought the giveaway that they were using fake golf bricks in all the movies was because of the ping sound :) Pretty wild that you could have a highly malleable, very dense, metal make a ping.
I swear, It's like God put it on earth for us to use it as money. Only yellow metal, we naturally gravitate to it, you can shape it, break it down to increments, it's rare enough to be valuable, etc.
I saw a documentary where they showed how gold leaf is made by repeatedly hammering gold inside leather sheets, and refolding, and re-pounding, to where a single layer is so thin that it can be used to ice cakes and be eaten. It is an incredible metal. Maybe I should buy some :)
