My Grandfather was part of operation overlord.
He survived but never spoke about it.
A friend of mine whose dad told me about his experience at the beach. The sgt. on his boat was threatening to shoot anyone who didn't move forward. He told me about how many men drowned that day b/c the boat pilots wouldn't go any further and many, many men died b/c the water was too deep when they where forced off the loading ramps, and their packs(55-70#) weighed them down and they died in 10 ft of water.
And 9 days later, the Battle for Saipan started.
13,790 American casualties, 3,426 of those being KIA.
So many folks don't even remember there being an entire half of the war in the Pacific.
