In 1998, Tom Clancy wrote Rainbow Six, which was about global elite eco-cultists partnering with big pharma to develop a killer virus based on ebola that would take out half the population, then they'd develop a "vaccine" that would contain a slow release version of the virus which would take out the other half of the population. The virus was to be spread at the Olympic games. The elite bought huge tracts of land in Kansas to take refuge and wait out the virus.
Edit: Correction, Tom Clancy did not die days after Breitbart, it was the coroner who preformed the autopsy on Breitbart who died days later. Clancy died in October 2013.
The virus depicted in Rainbow Six wasn't supposed to take out half the population, it was supposed to take out 99.9% of the population, leaving just a few hundred of the people orchestrating the plot to "re-populate" the world. (an excellent book, if you can take Clancy's over-descriptive paragraphs on weapons :) )
