No. Not even close. People use "rein" and "reign" in error all the time and seem to think they mean the same thing, but no. They don't.
"Rein in" is an expression that's always spelled the same and means to put limitations on, restrict, hold back, or restrain. It comes from the word rein, the leather strap attached to the bit that's used to control a horse.
To reign is to be a monarch; or to administer or rule as over a kingdom; or figuratively, e.g., "Jeff Beck is the reigning king of the electric guitar."
Fair enough, I'm just dumb. I will leave it at that.
Though gotta admit the "reigned" example sounds silly, since one cannot rule over an inanimate object. Well aware it's just a figure of speech, just sounds silly.
