The fact that an archive link works proves you don't need a reddit account to view it. Sounds more like he just said that without clicking the link.

I could not access the link either. I just got a popup saying that the linked page might contain harmful information, so if I wanted to view it, I had to view it using the Reddit app.

I honestly didn't know until recently that you could bypass the "can't view without an account" thing by archiving. Just sharing in case others didn't know!
