John Cleese was never anything like a counter culture icon, that is nonsense. He did not like being in the Pythons at all but it paid the rent quite handsomely.
He was and is part of the establishment. Cambridge footlights, the BBC and TWTWTW and on to being a Python and what he really wanted to do, Fawlty Towers.
As for what happened? He married a succession of aggressive and mercenary American women/bitch queens from hell who took him for all he had in the divorce courts, that's what happened.
