She's certainly not dumb. Maybe she thought she was better off getting on a small private plane that was flown by someone she and her family knew well.
Can you imagine the terrible fear and paranoia that our intrepid whistleblowers are having to experience? It's got to be horrible.

But if its pre-planned and they have your phone bugged you know they are going to go sabotage the plane. Less collateral damage. That's like standing in front of a cliff waiting for them to shove you off.
