Somebody should tell Dave Collum that the period is supposed to go inside the quotation marks.

No, the new style is logical quotation punctuation. If the punctuation wasn’t part of the quote, it shouldn’t be within the quotation marks.

You're talking about British English. With American English, the period always goes inside the quotation marks. Sauce
