Haven't heard about them needing to "legally" have a back door, just that your ISP may not be able to see your exact data through a VPN (bold, as the content is just routed through them before being delivered to your PC anyway) but would be able to track it down and forcibly acquire it from any legitimate business anyway.

Most ads for vpn's say they make it harder for your data to be shared, nothing is 100%
