Chiang Kai-shek led an anti-Communist coup in 1927 and co-opted the Green Gang in an "enemy of my enemy is my friend" kind of arrangement. They were not inherently philosophical allies. Study some Metternich and Realpolitik (" no allies, just interests"). For intance, recall that the US was allied wth Ho Chi Min against the Japanese in WWII - We abndoned Ho to support tthe French by way of alliance, and in 1954 they left us with the tar-baby in Vietnam, affirming Franc's interests. Ho was pushed into the arms of the Soviets. The rest is history
FWIW Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Madam Chiang were both Christians and promoted Chistian evangelism in the country. The Koumentang were supported by the US in the struggle against Mao post WWII. At a critical point when Chiang's forces were still on the Mainland a key military shipment of heavy equipment and other desperately needd armaments were ditched at sea instead of being delivered - an in -the- field betrayal effected by the traitorous in the US State Depatment intent on CHina falling into Communist hands This is what caused Chiang to retreat to Taiwan, but it gave the CCP a foothold on thr Mainland they have held since then. We'd soon pay for the State Department's betrayal years later in Korea.
I hold no love for a Taiwanese deep state any more than I do anywhere. That said I am not on board with the CCP acquiring Taiwan, by way of US abandonment of a people that has stood with us as a force against Communism for 70+ years.
The signs are there that the CCP could collapse, the only way I am cool with CCP action against Taiwan is if Xi is a white hat orchestrating the controlled demolition of communist China while tricking the CCP into an assault on Taiwan just to subvert them in their last gasp to mop up biolabs
