The only MREs I had in service were the first generation. Every entre and side item was freeze-dried to the same consistency as crackers. Thicker than crackers, but freeze-dried to a crispy state.
C-Rats were way better. Especially the canned fruit which was a hella nice have on a forced march. Moisture AND sugar energy. Oh, we only had 2 canteens too. And water reloads might happen, might not. Freeze-dried food and possible water shortage was not for good mood making.

Chicken in Buffalo sauce, with some bacon jalapeño cheese spread. You bet your ass I suffer from IBS now.
