Well look at German. Words have gender, not sex. Der, die, Das (masculine, feminine, neutral).

right, in gendered language usage (Spanish, German, Italian, etc), it is assigning a cluster of characteristics (masculine or feminine) to nouns and objects, even when those nouns or objects have no biological sexual traits.
And the neutral "gender" in German is used when talking about inanimate objects.
